Description

Maxima is a stoneware jug painted by hand with branches of lemons and leaves, framed by a band of trailing leaves under the rim and a border of arched leaf shapes and dots around the base. It is multicoloured on a solid glaze, and the painting runs all the way round, so it looks finished from whichever side faces you. It holds 1465ml, stands 22cm tall and is 12cm across, with a body that widens gently towards the base, a shaped pouring lip and an open loop handle.

That capacity makes it a jug for the whole table rather than a small milk jug: there is room for water, lemonade or iced tea to go round a family meal, or juice at a slow weekend breakfast. We think it belongs in the kitchen and at the dining table, and it is just as useful when the drinks are finished. Stood on the worktop, it makes a cheerful holder for wooden spoons, spatulas and other kitchen utensils, keeping them upright and within reach while you cook. Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing material, and at 1.1KG this jug has a reassuringly solid feel.

The lemons, leaves and borders are painted by hand on top of a solid glaze with a gentle sheen. Care is simple: the jug goes in the dishwasher, and it can also go in the microwave and the oven, so you can wash it with the rest of the dinner things. For styling, let the painting do the work. Pair it with plain glasses and simple tableware so the lemons stand out, or give it a spot on an open shelf or dresser where the painted rim and the arched border around the base can be seen from across the room.
