Description

A dining table, 107cm tall, in wood. Overhang decides how it feels to sit or stand at: a top flush with the frame reads neat and gives you nowhere to put your knees, and a little overhang does the opposite. At 120cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. A dining table is bought for the room it is in as much as the people around it. Allow a metre from the edge to the nearest wall so chairs can be pushed back without hitting it.

Dark surfaces show dust and light surfaces show marks. Which is the easier problem depends entirely on the room, and dust is usually the easier one. Iron is the traditional choice for a reason: it takes heat, weight and time without complaint. It will mark if it is left wet, so indoors or under cover is where it belongs. Acacia is dense, oily and naturally water-resistant, which is why it turns up on chopping boards and garden furniture alike. The grain is strongly figured, so no two boards read the same. It arrives in 2 boxes.

Furniture fails at the joints and the runners long before the surface wears out, which is why the way a piece is put together matters more than what it is finished with.

Allow 60cm of edge per person, and check the leg position: a table with corner legs seats fewer than a pedestal of the same size. It needs nothing beyond dusting, and a damp cloth on the finish rather than anything solvent.
