Description

A small round basket 15cm across and 15cm tall, with a dark brown leather loop stitched to the outside of the rim for hanging. A rope of jute is coiled in a spiral from the base upwards and each round is bound to the one below with fine cotton thread, cream in most places and black where the pattern runs. Across the middle the black thread is carried over several rounds at an angle, which throws up a band of chevrons all the way round. The base is flat, so it stands as readily as it hangs.

It hangs from the leather loop on a hook or a rail, on S-hooks over a kitchen rail. That suits bread and linens, loofahs and dog leads, or anything else wanted off the worktop and still within reach, and because the sides are soft the basket takes the shape of what goes in it. Standing on a shelf or a windowsill it does the same job the other way up. Mannu is made in two sizes and this is the small one, at 15cm across.

The basket is jute and cotton throughout, apart from the leather loop. Every one is coiled and bound by hand, so the run of the chevrons, the spacing of the black and the thickness of the jute rope differ from basket to basket. The colour is the natural tone of the fibre, with the black worked in as thread rather than dyed over the top.
