Description

A round basket 20cm across and 20cm tall, with a dark brown leather loop stitched to the outside of the rim. Hemp rope is coiled in a spiral from the base upwards and bound round with black and cream thread in fine close stripes, so the ground reads dark from across a room. Over the middle third, thick untwisted rope is laid across the coils in a bold zigzag that meets itself to form a row of open diamonds, standing well proud of the surface.

It hangs from the leather loop on a hook or a rail, including an S-hook over a kitchen rail. At 20cm across and 20cm deep it holds a good deal: a loaf, a stack of linens, loofahs in a bathroom or dog leads by a back door. The base is flat, so it will stand on a shelf or a worktop just as well as it hangs. Mannu is made in two sizes and this is the large one.

The basket is hemp and cotton, apart from the leather loop. It is coiled and bound entirely by hand, so the pitch of the diamonds, the spacing of the black stripe and the thickness of the rope differ from one basket to the next. The rim is finished with a plain band of the natural fibre, and the loop is stitched through it at the back.
