Malia Large Stoneware Jug - Cream

The Malia is a stoneware jug, 17.5cm tall, thrown on a wheel so the body carries the slight unevenness of the hand that turned it. It swells out from the foot and draws in towards a wide pulled spout, with a broad strap handle looping from the rim down to the lower body. The cream glaze runs thick and glossy over most of the surface and pools grey and darker at the rim and along the top of the handle, and low on the body a band of fine vertical strokes is painted on by hand where the glaze thins back towards the clay.

It holds 1890ml, which is close to two litres, so it will stand on a table as the water or the milk for several people rather than needing refilling through a meal. The spout is pulled wide enough to pour without dribbling down the front. The jug is food safe and goes in the dishwasher.

The jug is stoneware under a cream reactive glaze. A reactive glaze answers to the heat of the kiln rather than to the potter, and the result cannot be predicted, so the markings and the depth of colour come out differently on every jug and the grey at the rim falls where it falls. The Malia range also runs to a smaller jug, along with plates, bowls, mugs, a teapot and a cup and saucer.

Will every jug look the same?

Not exactly. The reactive glaze answers to the heat of the kiln, so the markings and the colouring differ on every jug.

How do I look after it?

Wash it after every use to stop it staining, using a mild detergent, and do not leave it to soak. It is dishwasher safe. Handle it with care, as it will chip.
