Description

This is a pair of fish that stand on their tails. Each vase is shaped as an upright fish, its open mouth forming the neck, with a round painted eye, ridged fins along the body and two tail fins splayed at the base as feet. Both are made of stoneware and painted by hand in multicoloured tones, scattered with small dots. Each stands 19cm tall, 11.5cm long and 7.5cm wide, so these are slim little vases made for a single stem rather than a full bunch, and as a set of 2 the pair comes together, ready to stand side by side.

The narrow mouth suits a single stem, a sprig of blossom or a few dried grasses, and the fish look just as good left empty. Stand them side by side on a mantelpiece, a bookshelf or a windowsill, or split them between a desk and a bedside table so each holds its own small arrangement. At 19cm tall they fit a shelf with little headroom, and they bring a bit of humour to a kitchen dresser or a hallway console.
