Description

A neat, shallow fitting for ceilings where there is not much depth to play with. The trim is only 5mm thick, so what you see from below is a slim white ring and the lamp behind it, and the body sits within a 35mm drop. It takes a GU10 lamp, and we would put a reflector LED in it for a controlled cone of light rather than a wide wash. It is not dimmable, so a plain switch suits it best.

We reach for downlights of this size in kitchens, utility rooms, hallways and shower rooms, where protection against dust and splashes matters and a lower ceiling makes anything hanging a nuisance. Over a worktop run it picks out the surface neatly; a line of them along a corridor gives light with nothing to duck under. The narrow 60mm cut-out also helps in porches, alcoves and box rooms, where a wider aperture starts to dominate a small ceiling. It suits anyone lighting a whole floor to a budget, since the price per point stays low without the light looking cheap from below.

The visible ring is finished in white, which reads quietly against a painted ceiling and disappears when the lamp is off. Keeping it clean is a case of a dry cloth over the trim now and then, with the power off and the lamp cold; in a kitchen, where grease can dull the surface, a cloth barely dampened with warm water and then a dry one will bring it back.
