Description

The Karuma Large is a tall ceramic jug, 21.5cm high and 8.5cm across, with straight sides and a pinched pouring lip. It has no handle. The pattern is painted in fine blue lines running down from just under the rim, close together at the top and thinning as they go, until they break up and stop against the plain white clay towards the foot. Every line is a separate stroke, so the density shifts around the jug.

It holds 1050ml. The sides are straight and the footprint is only 8.5cm across, so it takes little room among plates on a table while standing 21.5cm above them. Without a handle it is held around the body and poured from the pinched lip. It stands beside two matching mugs, and it takes flowers as readily as it pours at the table.

The jug is white clay, painted and glazed. These pieces are shaped and painted by hand, drawing on both indigenous and contemporary influences, so the lines fall differently on every jug and no two carry the same fade. Karuma runs to a smaller jug, mugs, plates, bowls and a dinnerware set in the same pattern.
