Description

A set of four napkins in linen, each 45cm square, with a fine cord stitched in a short way from the edge to make a border on all four sides. The linen is a plain weave in a soft oatmeal, close enough to hold a fold and open enough to show the thread running through it. The edges are turned and worked by hand, and the cord sits slightly proud of the surface so the border catches the light as a line rather than a change of colour.

At 45cm square these are dinner napkins rather than tea napkins: folded in four one sits inside a side plate, and opened out it covers a lap. Four of them lay a table for four. The border runs far enough in from the edge to stay visible when the napkin is folded in half or pushed through a ring. Against a patterned plate the plain oatmeal sits as a ground rather than competing with it.

The linen is 100 per cent, handwoven in Portugal and finished by hand on every piece. Linen creases in use and softens with age, so the set will not stay as flat as it arrives, and the colour can fade where it sits in direct sunlight. The set is four napkins and nothing else.
