Description

JCB D LR20 super alkaline batteries supply 1.5V power for high-drain devices including torches, portable radios, motorised toys and camping lanterns. This four-pack uses alkaline chemistry to deliver up to 30% longer runtime compared to standard zinc-carbon D cells, making them suitable for equipment that draws sustained current over extended periods.

D-size batteries are the largest common cylindrical cell and are designed for devices where AA or AAA cells would deplete too quickly. Typical applications include large torches (4-6 D cells), boomboxes, emergency radios, electric camping lanterns, outdoor security sensors and battery-powered fans. The JCB Super Alkaline range performs across a temperature range that includes outdoor use in UK conditions, though extreme cold below 0°C will reduce capacity as with all alkaline cells.

Each cell measures 34.2mm diameter by 61.5mm height, fitting standard D-cell compartments in UK and international devices. The shelf life extends to several years when stored at room temperature in the original blister pack, meaning spare packs can be kept for emergency use without significant capacity loss. The four-pack blister format protects the cells from short-circuit risk during storage and makes it straightforward to replace all cells in a multi-cell device at once.

Frequently Asked

What devices use D batteries?

D cells are used in large torches, portable radios, boomboxes, camping lanterns, electric fans, motorised toys and outdoor security devices. Any equipment requiring sustained high-current draw over long periods typically uses D cells rather than smaller AA or AAA batteries.

How long do these batteries last?

Runtime depends on the device's current draw. In a typical 4-D-cell torch drawing 500mA, JCB Super Alkaline D cells can deliver 15-20 hours of continuous use. In lower-drain applications like radios or clocks, the same cells can last several months.

Can these be used in outdoor equipment?

Yes. Alkaline chemistry performs across a wide temperature range, though capacity reduces in cold conditions below 0°C. For year-round outdoor use in UK conditions these cells are suitable; for extreme cold climates lithium D cells offer better low-temperature performance.

Are these rechargeable?

No. These are single-use alkaline cells and must not be recharged. Attempting to recharge alkaline batteries risks leakage or rupture. For rechargeable D-size power, look for NiMH D cells sold separately.
