Description

The JCB D LR20 is a 1.5V alkaline cell in the standard D size format, packaged as a pair. Alkaline chemistry provides higher capacity than zinc-carbon cells, making these batteries suitable for medium- to high-drain devices like large torches, portable radios, camping lanterns, and battery-powered toys that draw continuous current.

D-size batteries are primarily used in applications where device runtime matters more than size or weight. Larger torches, boomboxes, emergency radios and camping equipment typically specify D cells because the physical size allows a higher amp-hour capacity than AA or AAA formats. The JCB Super Alkaline range is formulated to maintain voltage output across a longer discharge cycle than economy alkaline cells, reducing the frequency of battery changes in daily-use devices.

The cells retain usable voltage in low-temperature conditions down to around -10°C, which makes them workable for outdoor use in UK winters, although all alkaline batteries lose some capacity in cold environments compared to room-temperature operation. The twin-pack format suits devices that use D batteries in pairs (most large torches and many radios) and provides a spare set for quick replacement when the first pair depletes.

Frequently Asked

What devices use D batteries?

D cells are common in large torches, portable radios, camping lanterns, battery-powered megaphones, some children's toys, and emergency backup devices. Most of these devices use two or more D batteries in series to achieve higher voltage or longer runtime.

How long do these batteries last?

Runtime depends on the device's current draw. In a typical 3-LED camping torch drawing around 200-300mA, a pair of D alkaline batteries can run for 15-25 hours continuously. In a portable radio with moderate volume the runtime may extend to 40-60 hours. High-drain devices like powered speakers will deplete the cells faster.

Can these be used in cold weather?

Yes, but with reduced capacity. Alkaline batteries maintain usable voltage down to approximately -10°C, which covers most UK outdoor conditions. Expect around 20-30% capacity loss compared to room-temperature operation. For extreme cold, lithium cells perform better but cost significantly more.

Are these rechargeable?

No. These are single-use alkaline cells and must not be recharged. Attempting to recharge alkaline batteries can cause leakage or rupture. For rechargeable D cells, look for NiMH chemistry batteries with a stated mAh capacity.
