Description

The JCB AA R6 zinc carbon batteries come in a 4-pack blister, each cell delivering 1.5V nominal voltage. Zinc carbon chemistry provides a lower energy density than alkaline, making these batteries suited to low-drain intermittent-use devices rather than high-current continuous applications. The R6 designation is the IEC standard code for AA-size zinc carbon cells.

These batteries are designed for remote controls, wall clocks, basic LED torches, radios used occasionally, and other devices that draw power intermittently or in small amounts over extended periods. Zinc carbon cells perform best when the load is light and usage is not continuous — they are not recommended for digital cameras, motorised toys, or other high-drain devices where alkaline or lithium chemistry would be more appropriate.

The JCB branding is licensed to a battery manufacturing partner and positions these cells as a budget-focused alternative to premium alkaline packs. The blister pack measures 90mm wide by 120mm tall and contains four individually shrink-wrapped cells. Total pack weight is 60g. Shelf life for zinc carbon batteries is typically 2-3 years from manufacture when stored at room temperature in low-humidity conditions.

Frequently Asked

What devices are zinc carbon batteries suitable for?

Zinc carbon batteries work best in low-drain intermittent-use devices: remote controls, wall clocks, basic LED torches, radios used occasionally, and similar appliances. They are not recommended for digital cameras, motorised toys, gaming controllers, or other high-current devices where alkaline or lithium chemistry would perform better.

How do zinc carbon batteries differ from alkaline?

Zinc carbon chemistry provides lower energy density and shorter run time than alkaline under the same load. Alkaline batteries typically last 3-5 times longer in moderate-drain devices. Zinc carbon cells are less expensive upfront but have a shorter shelf life and lower total energy capacity.

What is the shelf life?

Zinc carbon batteries typically retain charge for 2-3 years from manufacture when stored at room temperature in low-humidity conditions. They self-discharge faster than alkaline cells, so it's best to use them within the first year or two of purchase for optimal performance.

Are these rechargeable?

No. Zinc carbon batteries are single-use primary cells and must not be recharged. Attempting to recharge a non-rechargeable battery can cause leakage, overheating or rupture.
