Description

This is a cream fire hood for use with recessed downlights, moulded from an intumescent material that reacts to heat by swelling and closing off the opening a light fitting leaves behind. In ordinary conditions it does nothing at all and is never seen. It measures 15cm across and stands the same in height, which covers the round downlights most homes now use. Its fire rating runs to 66 minutes, putting it in step with what many domestic ceilings are held to.

We reach for one of these whenever downlights are going into a ceiling with a fire rating to keep, which in practice means flats, multi-storey houses and rented property being brought up to standard. Electricians tend to buy them by the boxful; homeowners usually buy to match the number of lights they have. The body is moulded as a single piece, cream right through rather than coated, and light enough to sit in the palm of your hand.
