Description

The Iba is a ceramic jug 21.5cm high: a straight-sided cylinder 8.5cm across that draws in a little towards the foot, with a pulled triangular spout and a round loop handle standing off one side. The clay is white and the glaze is left plain over most of the body. Around the top runs a band of indigo lines painted by hand, each finishing in a heavy teardrop at its lower end, which is the matchstick pattern.

The jug is narrow for its height, 8.5cm across the body against 21.5cm tall, so it takes very little room on a table for what it holds. The handle is a full loop rather than a half one, which leaves room for a whole hand around it. It is dishwasher safe and food safe, so it can go from the table straight into the machine. The painted band sits at the top of the body, where it stays visible whether the jug is standing on a table or tipped to pour.

The jug is ceramic, made from white clay in Vietnam and hand-painted there. Every line is laid on one at a time, so the spacing of the matchsticks and the weight of the indigo vary from jug to jug. The Iba range runs well beyond the jug, to dinner plates, side plates, pasta and cereal bowls, serving bowls, mugs, a butter dish and a twelve-piece dinnerware set, all in the same indigo.
