Description
A large opal white sphere that glows evenly from within rather than throwing light in one direction. At 50cm across it reads as a proper ball rather than a shade, and the diffusion softens an E27 lamp into a gentle, all-round wash. The drop is adjustable across a useful span, so it can hang low over a table or high in a stairwell. Dimming is possible with a suitable lamp and dimmer. Nothing on it asks for attention; the shape does the work.
Rated for outdoor use, it suits a covered porch, a veranda or a garden room where it will meet damp air and the odd splash of rain, and it is equally at home indoors over a dining table or in a hallway. We reach for it where a room wants light with no hard edges and no visible hardware, and where a directional fitting would feel too busy. We would fit a warm white LED GLS lamp here, up to 15W, which is plenty behind a diffuser of this size.
The opal white finish runs across the whole globe, so it stays quiet against a pale ceiling when it is switched off. Keeping it looking well is a matter of a damp cloth over the sphere and a dry one after; outdoors, pollen and road dust settle faster than they would in a hallway, so an occasional wash keeps the light clear. It carries a one year warranty. It is one we point people towards when they want something plain and generous rather than fussy. We stock the same ball in two smaller sizes, and the range continues into oval and ball table lamps and into ceiling fittings that group several globes together. Lamps are not included.

Frequently Asked
How wide is the globe, and how low will it hang?
The sphere measures 500mm in diameter, and the drop can be set anywhere between 550mm and 2000mm, so it works over a low table or dropped through a tall stairwell.
What lamp should I use?
It takes one E27 lamp, and an LED GLS (A60) shape suits it best. Keep to a maximum of 15W.
Can it be dimmed?
Yes, provided you use a dimmable lamp with a compatible dimmer. Neither the lamp nor a dimmer is supplied.
Is it genuinely suitable for outside?
It is rated IP44, which covers sheltered outdoor spots such as a porch, a covered terrace or a veranda. It is not intended for full exposure to driving rain.
How heavy is it?
It weighs 4.6kg.
How do I clean the opal shade?
Switch off at the wall and let everything cool, then wipe the globe with a cloth wrung out in warm soapy water and dry it. Avoid solvents and abrasive creams, which will dull the surface.
