The Hosmane Wall Light pairs a slim black backplate with a short square beam of pale wood that reaches out from the wall. Black cord is wound in loops along the beam before it drops to a bare black lampholder, so the whole fitting has the look of a workshop bracket. The body is steel and wood in a black and wood finish, with the grain of the beam left plain to see. It stands 21.5cm tall, reaches 19cm out from the wall and measures 6.5cm in length. It takes a standard E27 bulb, which is not included, and it is rated IP20, which settles where it goes: indoors, in dry rooms only.

Because the lampholder hangs bare, the bulb becomes part of the design, and a clear filament bulb suits it well, giving a warm glow against the wall. We like a pair either side of a bed, where the wood beam holds the bulb out from the headboard and leaves the bedside table free. It works as well beside a sofa, along a hallway or above a desk in a home office. The black steel and pale wood sit happily with exposed brick, dark painted walls, oak floors and rustic furniture, and they bring a little warmth to a plain modern room too.

There is no switch on the fitting itself; it is switched at the wall, so it runs from the room's light switch and keeps the lines clean. It works on 220-240V, 50/60Hz mains and weighs 0.54KG. As a wired-in mains light, it is installed by a qualified electrician, and the installation instructions are available as a download.
