Description

This is a stoneware bowl with a handle, and the handle is what people notice first: a little bird sits against the side, its body painted on the bowl and its neck and head curving out to form the grip. Around it, leafy branches are painted by hand across a green glaze, each one drawn a little differently from the next. At 13cm across and 7cm tall it holds 460ml, a generous single portion, and it weighs 0.45KG, so it feels settled on the table without being heavy to lift.

That 460ml size makes it a soup bowl that can be held by the handle and carried one-handed from the kitchen to the sofa. We like it for porridge or cereal at breakfast, a bowl of soup at lunch, or a portion of stew or chilli on a cold evening, and it sits just as happily beside a plate at a weekend brunch or on a tray for breakfast in bed. The bird and the leafy branches give it a country kitchen feel that works on a scrubbed wooden table as well as a modern one. It makes a thoughtful gift for a keen cook, for anyone who loves birds and botanical patterns, or for someone setting up a first home.

It is made entirely of stoneware and painted by hand, with a glossy green outer glaze, a plain glazed interior and a narrow band at the foot left free of the green. Care is simple: it goes in the dishwasher, the microwave and the oven, so you can reheat leftovers or bake a small crumble in it and then wash it without fuss. Stoneware holds heat well. For the table, pair it with plain plates in a quiet neutral so the painted branches and the little bird take centre stage. The styling props shown are not included.
