Description

The Hereford is a downward-facing outdoor wall lantern with a clear glass cylinder surrounded by decorative scroll ironwork, set inside a black die-cast aluminium frame topped with a pointed canopy. The lantern houses a single E27 bulb fitting (sold separately) and directs light downward through the base of the glass, making it suitable for illuminating doorways, porches and pathway entrances.

Designed for covered outdoor positions such as under eaves, covered porches and sheltered patio walls, the Hereford carries an IP43 rating that protects against solid objects over 1mm and water spray at angles up to 60° from vertical. This is sufficient for most UK residential sheltered outdoor positions but not for fully exposed walls or areas subject to driving rain. The wall bracket projects approximately 200mm from the mounting surface and the lantern head measures roughly 170mm in diameter.

The black finish is a textured powder coat over die-cast aluminium that resists corrosion in coastal and damp environments better than mild steel alternatives. The scroll detailing inside the glass cylinder references traditional English ironwork without dominating the overall form, allowing the lantern to pair with both period properties and newer builds where a less ornate outdoor light would look too minimal. The clear glass keeps the bulb visible when unlit, so pairing with a decorative filament LED gives the fitting additional character during daylight hours.

Frequently Asked

What bulb does it take?

The Hereford takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED bulb between 6-10W and 2700K for outdoor pathway lighting, or a decorative filament LED for additional visual interest.

Can it be used in fully exposed outdoor positions?

The IP43 rating suits sheltered outdoor positions under eaves, covered porches and similar locations. For fully exposed walls subject to driving rain or horizontal spray, a higher IP rating (IP44 or IP65) would be more appropriate.

How is the lantern mounted?

The back plate fixes to the wall with two screws (typically into wall plugs or directly into masonry). The electrical cable feeds through a central knockout in the back plate before the lantern head is secured. A qualified electrician should complete the installation to UK wiring regulations.

What size is the lantern?

The lantern head measures approximately 170mm in diameter and the wall bracket projects roughly 200mm from the mounting surface. Height from the top of the decorative finial to the base of the lantern is approximately 280mm.
