Description
The Hereford is a single-light outdoor wall lantern in die-cast aluminium with a matt black powder-coated finish, decorative scrollwork cage and a traditional coach-lantern silhouette. The lantern head measures 150mm wide by 420mm tall and sits on a shaped mounting bracket that projects 215mm from the wall. Clear glass panels on all four sides allow an E27 bulb (sold separately, up to 60W) to cast light through the scrollwork detailing, creating shadow patterns on adjacent walls and paving.
Designed for sheltered outdoor locations such as covered porches, front door alcoves and recessed patio walls, the Hereford carries an IP23 rating that protects against vertically falling water and rain at angles up to 60° from vertical. The rating does not cover direct exposure to driving rain or horizontal water jets, so the fitting is best mounted under an overhang, beneath a porch canopy, or in an entrance recess where it will not face the full force of a storm. The die-cast aluminium construction resists corrosion better than pressed steel in damp UK climates.
The scrollwork detailing on the cage is cast into the aluminium rather than welded-on separate pieces, giving the fitting a more integrated appearance when viewed up close. The black finish is applied as a powder coat over the raw casting, providing a consistent colour layer that does not flake or chip as readily as wet paint on outdoor metalwork. The lantern head sits on a fluted central post that runs from the backplate to the conical roof finial, giving the fitting a traditional coaching-inn aesthetic that pairs well with period properties, brick facades and timber-framed buildings.

Frequently Asked
What does the IP23 rating mean for outdoor use?
IP23 protects against vertically falling rain and water spray at angles up to 60° from vertical. The lantern suits sheltered positions like covered porches, alcoves and recessed entrances, but should not be mounted in fully exposed locations where it would face driving rain or horizontal water jets.
What bulb does it take?
The lantern takes a standard E27 Edison screw bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED filament bulb at 6-8W and 2200K-2700K to suit the traditional aesthetic.
How is it wired and fitted?
The Hereford mounts to a standard UK outdoor-rated back box and connects to mains wiring via a terminal block inside the backplate. The mounting bracket bolts through two fixing points spaced approximately 100mm apart. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with Part P Building Regulations.
Can it be used in fully exposed locations?
No. The IP23 rating is suitable for sheltered positions only. For walls with no overhang or porch canopy, look for an IP44 or IP65-rated alternative that offers protection against water splashes and jets from any direction.
