Description

The Hereford is a semi-flush porch lantern in black die-cast aluminium with clear ribbed glass panels and decorative scroll ironwork. The fitting mounts directly to the ceiling via a circular canopy and short stem, projecting approximately 200mm below the ceiling line. The lantern housing holds a single E27 bulb (sold separately) behind clear ribbed glass that diffuses light across the porch floor and surrounding walls.

Designed for covered porches, front door canopies, and sheltered entrance areas, the Hereford carries an IP23 rating that provides protection from solid objects larger than 12mm and from rain at angles up to 60° from vertical. The fitting is not intended for fully exposed positions — it needs a porch roof or canopy overhead to shield it from direct rainfall and driving weather. The black die-cast aluminium frame resists corrosion better than painted steel in outdoor conditions, though periodic checks of the ceiling fixings are recommended in coastal or high-humidity locations.

The scroll ironwork around the glass cage is cast as part of the aluminium frame rather than applied separately, giving the fitting a more cohesive structure. The black finish is a low-sheen powder coat that softens reflections and pairs well with traditional brick, stone, and painted timber exteriors. The ribbed glass panels catch and refract light from the bulb, creating a decorative glow across the vertical ribs when viewed from the side while directing most of the useful illumination downwards onto the porch surface.

Frequently Asked

Can this be used in fully exposed outdoor positions?

No. The IP23 rating means the fitting is protected from rain at angles up to 60° from vertical, but it needs overhead shelter. It suits covered porches, door canopies, and entrance areas with a roof or overhang above. Do not install in positions where rain can fall directly onto the top of the fitting or where driving wind pushes water horizontally into the glass panels.

What bulb does it take?

The fitting takes one standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. For outdoor porch use, most installers choose a warm-white LED bulb between 6-10W and 2700K-3000K to provide enough light to see keys and steps without harsh glare.

How is it installed?

The lantern mounts to the ceiling via a circular canopy fixed with screws to a standard UK ceiling rose or junction box. The electrical connection is made inside the canopy before the lantern body is secured to the stem. Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with current wiring regulations.

How is the glass cleaned?

The ribbed glass panels can be wiped with a damp microfibre cloth and a small amount of glass cleaner. The ribs trap dust and cobwebs more readily than smooth glass, so periodic cleaning maintains both the light output and the decorative appearance. Switch off the power and allow the bulb to cool before cleaning.
