Description

Hadden is a set of four oval stoneware plates, each 29cm long, 18cm wide and 2.5cm tall, with a large crab spread across the centre. The base is a soft cream, and the crab is worked in a reactive glaze with a glass component laid over it, so it holds the light with a glassy depth that a printed pattern never quite manages. A reactive glaze shifts as it fires, which means the tones in each crab vary a little from plate to plate. We think that is half the charm: four plates that clearly belong together without being identical.

At 29cm long the oval is roomier than a side plate, a good size for a grilled fish fillet, a few prawns, a slice of quiche or a spread of starters to share. These plates are made for food, so they belong on the table rather than the dresser: set one at each place for a seafood supper, or bring them out as small serving plates in the middle of a summer lunch. They suit a dining room or kitchen with a coastal feel, a holiday cottage, or anyone who likes their table relaxed and a little playful.

Each plate is solid stoneware, a dense, hard wearing material, with a low rim and a softly uneven edge that gives it a relaxed, informal character. They go in the dishwasher, so they suit everyday meals as well as special occasions, but they are not for the microwave or the oven: warm food in another dish first, then serve it on the plates once it is ready. The styling props shown are not included. When you lay the table, keep everything else quiet, with plain linen napkins, clear glasses and a bowl of lemon wedges, and let the four crabs carry the look.
