Description

These are four stoneware bowls in cream, each 14.5cm across and 5cm tall, with a single fish at the centre of every one. The fish stands slightly proud of the surface, its scales and tail picked out in the glaze, so you can feel it under a fingertip as well as see it. Each bowl holds 450ml, which makes it a low, generous side bowl rather than a deep cereal bowl: wide enough to show off what it holds, shallow enough to sit neatly on a dinner plate.

Set them out for a side of rice or greens, a starter salad, olives and dips when friends visit, or a dessert of yoghurt and fruit after dinner. The fish motif suits a seafood supper or a long summer lunch in the garden, and it looks just as much at home on an everyday kitchen table. Because there are four, they make a tidy place setting for a table of four, and they make a thoughtful present for anyone setting up a first kitchen or a holiday home by the coast.

The bowls are made from 100% stoneware, a dense, hard-wearing ceramic, and finished in a reactive glaze with an overlaying glass component. Reactive glazes respond to the heat of the kiln, so the speckle and tone shift a little from bowl to bowl, and no two are quite the same. They go in the dishwasher. The glass in the glaze means they are not for the microwave or the oven, so warm food in another dish and serve it into these. For an easy table, sit one on each dinner plate and let the cream and the fish do the work against plain linen or wood.
