Description

This metal mantel clock is shaped like an old-fashioned gramophone. Its flared horn curves up and over a round dial, which sits on a square box base. The finish is antique brass with a distressed, vintage look. The horn and the bezel have a brushed gold tone, and the base is a deeper bronze brown with a little grille and round knob details on the front. The cream dial has a soft wood-grain print, bold Roman numerals and slim black hands around a gold centre. It stands 26.5cm tall, 16.5cm wide and 15cm deep, so it reads clearly across a room without crowding a shelf.

As its name suggests, it is made for the mantelpiece, but it sits just as happily on a sideboard, a bookcase, a hall console or a desk in a study. It stands on its own base, so there is no hook or nail to find, and you can move it from room to room. The analogue face is easy to read at a glance. The warm metal tones sit well with wood, leather and other vintage-style pieces. If you are looking for a gift with a bit of character, this one has plenty to talk about.

Inside is a quartz movement that runs on AA battery power, the same cell sold as MN1500 or LR6. The battery is not included, so keep one to hand before you wrap it. There is no snooze or light, just a simple clock that keeps time. The body is metal, and the worn look of the finish is deliberate, part of its vintage character. To keep it looking its best, dust it with a soft dry cloth and avoid polishes or harsh cleaners. Set it beside a stack of old books or a framed print and it brings a nostalgic note to any room.
