Description

This small stoneware bowl is shaped like a fruit, with a short stem at one end and a fluted crown at the other, so it sits on the table like something freshly picked. Inside, a raised pattern of rounded segments covers the base, with a curving stem and leaf running across them, and the whole rim is scalloped. It is 17cm long, 14cm wide and 5cm tall and holds 200ml, which makes it a dip or side bowl rather than a cereal bowl. The pink glaze is speckled, and where it thins over the raised edges the bare stoneware shows, picking out the relief.

Set it out for olives, nuts, a dipping sauce or a handful of berries, or put one beside each plate for butter, chutney or a dressing. The stem and crown stand out from the sides like small tabs, which makes it easy to lift and pass along a crowded table. It suits a summer lunch, an evening of cheese and crackers or a weekend breakfast, and it sits as happily on a dresser shelf as on the table. Between meals it makes a pretty dish for rings and earrings on a dressing table, or a place for keys by the front door.
