Description
This hand painted metal trinket box takes the form of a frog crouched low and about to jump, its back legs folded beneath it and its front feet planted ready to spring. The body is a glossy bright green that shades to a softer lime along the sides, scattered with orange spots and edged in gold tone, with a line of small clear stones along its back and front legs and pale blue undersides to its toes. Open it and the inside is a warm, sunny orange. It stands 3.7cm high, 6.1cm wide and 5.4cm deep, small enough to sit in the palm of your hand.
The frog opens into two halves on a small hinge, the top lifting away with the head to reveal a shallow hollow in each half for the little things that tend to wander: a ring slipped off before washing up, a pair of stud earrings, a spare button or a tiny folded note. On a dressing table it keeps those pieces together in one place, and on a bedroom shelf, a living room windowsill or beside a desk it works just as well as a bright ornament. We like it anywhere a spot of green will lift a quiet corner, and being so small it never crowds the surface it sits on.
It is made from metal alloy, with its colour painted on by hand, which gives it a glossy, jewel-bright look. To keep it looking its best, dust it now and then with a soft dry cloth and keep it away from water, as you would any painted metal piece. Open and close it gently rather than prising the halves apart. Tucked into tissue paper, it makes a cheerful little gift, and a frog poised to leap is a happy thing to find on a shelf each morning.
