Figuria Oval Stoneware Platter - Blue

This is an oval stoneware platter, 38cm long, 23cm wide and 2.5cm tall, covered from rim to rim in a blue pattern of birds, flowers and leaves. It is made of 100% stoneware, a dense, hard-wearing ceramic, and at 1KG it has a reassuring weight that keeps it steady when it is loaded and carried to the table. The birds are scattered among the sprigs rather than set in neat rows, so the pattern reads as lively and informal, and a fine contrasting rim traces the oval outline and frames the whole surface.

At that length it is a proper serving platter rather than a plate, sized for the middle of the table: a sharing spread of cheese and fruit, slices of roast meat, grilled fish or a heap of roasted vegetables. At 2.5cm tall it is shallow, so it suits food that sits flat rather than anything served in a pool of sauce. It can go in the oven, so you can warm food on it and carry it straight to the table, and in the microwave for reheating whatever is left over. It earns its place at Sunday lunch, a weekend brunch or a dinner with friends, and it suits anyone who likes a patterned piece to bring a plain table to life.

The pattern is a decal, a printed transfer applied to the surface, which gives the birds and flowers their crisp, clean outlines. When the meal is over it goes in the dishwasher with everything else, so there is no hand washing to dread. Stoneware holds heat well, which is handy when food comes from the oven to the table on it. For styling, pair it with plainer tableware so the pattern stays the centre of attention, or stand it upright on a dresser shelf between meals, where the birds and flowers show in full.
