Description

This is the tallest of Harte's four Gate Lodge bollards and it gives the widest spread of the four. The body is a single cast iron column, stepped and beaded along its length, with a frosted polycarbonate lens set near the top and a domed cap above it. The frosting matters: a clear lens on a bollard puts the lamp straight into your eye as you walk past, while a frosted one turns the same lamp into an even glow that lights the ground rather than the viewer.

It is made for a driveway edge, a path through a garden, the corner of a lawn or a run along a boundary wall. At 950mm it stands a little above waist height, high enough to be seen from a car and low enough not to glare into a ground-floor window. It weighs 44.30KG, which is heavy for its size and is the point: a bollard that gets clipped by a wheelbarrow should not move. It bolts down to a hard surface or on to a foundation frame set in concrete, which Harte sell separately in three sizes.

The lamp is an ordinary E27 screw fitting supplied without a bulb, so you pick the output and the colour; a 7W LED at 2700K suits most garden positions. Harte rate it IP44 for splashing from any direction, cast and finish it in New Ross, County Wexford, and hand spray it in gloss black enamel. Allow two to five weeks because it is made to order, and ask at the time of ordering if you want a colour other than black. Wiring needs a qualified electrician on a protected outdoor circuit.
