Description

Eveready's 6V zinc battery is the tall rectangular block that powers lanterns and work lamps. The maker lists the cell as PJ996 and the pack prints 4R25 and 996; all three codes name the same battery, and lamp makers quote whichever standard they follow. Six volts from a single unit means no tray of four cells to line up and no weak cell dragging the rest down. A coiled spring terminal stands on the top face, ready for the contacts inside a lamp base to press against it. The pack also states 0% mercury and cadmium.

The 6V spring top block is long established in hand lanterns, inspection lamps and the amber warning lamps seen around roadworks, as well as older camping and fishing lamps. If your lamp has a deep base with sprung contacts in the lid, this is the cell it was built around. The quickest check is the old battery: look on its label for PJ996, 4R25 or 996, and confirm the 6V figure.
