Description

The Eveready PJ996 is a 6V heavy-duty battery in the 4R25 format, built with zinc-based chemistry and spring terminals at the top. The battery measures 110mm high by 97mm square and weighs 0.55kg, giving it the size and voltage output needed for larger torches, camping lanterns, safety beacons and industrial devices that cannot run on AA or C cells.

Designed for low to moderate-drain applications, the PJ996 sits within the Eveready Silver range and provides consistent voltage over extended runtime in devices that draw power intermittently rather than continuously. The square profile and integrated spring terminals mean it drops directly into 4R25-compatible battery compartments without additional adapters or holders. The 0% mercury-cadmium construction meets current EU battery directive requirements for safer disposal.

The zinc chemistry gives the PJ996 a different discharge curve to alkaline equivalents, making it better suited to devices with mechanical switches and filament bulbs rather than high-intensity LED torches. Typical applications include older-style hand lanterns, railway signal lamps, site safety beacons and backup power for vintage radio equipment. The single-pack format allows replacement of a failed cell without buying multiples.

Frequently Asked

What devices use the PJ996 4R25 battery?

The PJ996 fits camping lanterns, larger hand torches, railway signal lamps, construction site beacons and some vintage radio equipment. If your device has a square 97mm battery compartment with spring contacts and requires 6V, the PJ996 is likely the correct replacement.

How does zinc chemistry differ from alkaline?

Zinc batteries provide lower peak current than alkaline equivalents but maintain more stable voltage under low to moderate drain. They suit devices with filament bulbs and mechanical switches better than high-intensity LED torches, which benefit from alkaline chemistry.

How long does the PJ996 last?

Runtime depends on the device's power draw. In a typical camping lantern drawing 0.5-1W, expect several hours of continuous use or weeks of intermittent evening use. Heavier-draw devices will deplete the battery faster.

Is the battery rechargeable?

No. The PJ996 is a primary (single-use) zinc cell. Attempting to recharge it risks leakage or rupture. Dispose of depleted cells at a battery recycling point.
