Description

The Knightsbridge VVAEMKIT is an LED emergency conversion kit designed specifically for VIIVA non-linkable linear fittings, providing 3-hour backup illumination during mains power failure. The unit contains a LiFePO4 battery pack, control circuitry and terminal connectors in a white polycarbonate housing measuring 251mm x 37mm x 26mm. It operates in both maintained mode (emergency light stays on when mains is live) and non-maintained mode (emergency light activates only on mains failure).

Compatible with VIIVA 4ft 36W, 4ft 42W and 5ft 42W adjustable linear fittings, the emergency pack fits within the body of the host fitting and connects via plug-in terminals to the fitting's driver and LED board. Installation requires access to the fitting's internal wiring during initial setup, but once fitted the emergency pack remains concealed within the linear housing. The IP20 rating limits the kit to internal dry locations such as office corridors, retail spaces, warehouses and industrial areas where emergency egress lighting is required.

The LiFePO4 battery chemistry provides a longer cycle life and more stable discharge characteristics than traditional NiCd or NiMH emergency packs, with lower self-discharge and better performance across temperature ranges typical of UK commercial interiors. The Class II construction means no earth connection is required between the emergency pack and the host fitting, simplifying the wiring loop. The unit operates on 230V 50Hz mains input and switches the emergency LED output on within one second of detecting mains failure.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between maintained and non-maintained mode?

In non-maintained mode the emergency light only activates when mains power fails, remaining off during normal operation. In maintained mode the emergency light stays on continuously when mains is present, then switches to battery power during a failure. Most UK commercial installations use non-maintained mode to reduce energy consumption and extend battery life.

How long does the battery last before replacement?

LiFePO4 batteries typically provide 4-6 years of service life in emergency lighting applications when cycled monthly as per BS 5266 testing schedules. Battery lifespan depends on ambient temperature, charge/discharge cycles and depth of discharge during testing.

Can this be retrofitted to an existing VIIVA fitting?

Yes, provided the VIIVA fitting is a non-linkable model (4ft 36W, 4ft 42W or 5ft 42W adjustable). Retrofitting requires opening the linear housing, disconnecting the existing driver connections and inserting the emergency pack's terminal connectors between the driver and LED board. This should be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Does the emergency pack need to be installed by a certified electrician?

Yes. Emergency lighting installations in commercial premises must comply with BS 5266 and be installed, commissioned and tested by personnel competent in emergency lighting systems and UK wiring regulations.
