Description

A dining table, 75cm tall, in wood. Overhang decides how it feels to sit or stand at: a top flush with the frame reads neat and gives you nowhere to put your knees, and a little overhang does the opposite. At 180cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. A dining table is bought for the room it is in as much as the people around it. Allow a metre from the edge to the nearest wall so chairs can be pushed back without hitting it.

It is the timber tool handles are made from, because it flexes under shock instead of fracturing. In a frame that means it absorbs the knocks that would start a split elsewhere. Metal is what allows a slim section to carry a load, which is why the proportions here are finer than the same piece in wood would be. Seats 6.

Everything loosens with use. A yearly check of the fixings takes a minute and is the difference between a piece that stays square and one that develops a lean it never loses.

Allow 60cm of edge per person, and check the leg position: a table with corner legs seats fewer than a pedestal of the same size. It needs nothing beyond dusting, and a damp cloth on the finish rather than anything solvent.
