Description

A slim tube of smoked glass on an E27 cap, this one reads grey and quiet when it is off and gives a clean cool white when lit. It stands 185mm tall and stays narrow, so the shape reads as a line rather than a bulb. It draws 4W and will dim with a suitable dimmer, so the level can come down through the evening.

We reach for tubular lamps like this where the fitting leaves the glass on show: an open pendant, a bare flex drop, a caged wall light, a multi-arm fitting over a dining table. The 4000K light is crisper than a warm white, which suits kitchens, home offices, utility rooms and hallways where you want to see clearly. Smoked glass softens the brightness at eye level, so it is easier to live with over an island or in a stairwell than a clear tube would be.

The body is glass in a smoked finish, taken onto a standard screw cap, and the LED gear sits inside the tube. Dust shows sooner on a tinted lamp than a clear one, so we would let it go cold with the power off, then run a dry cloth over the glass; no sprays, no cleaners, nothing damp near the cap. It carries a three year warranty. Because the light comes out all round rather than in a single direction, it is happy hanging vertically or held sideways in an arm, and a run of them lines up tidily behind glass. Will it work on my dimmer?

It is dimmable, but it needs a dimmer suited to LED lamps; a dimmer is not supplied with it. Older resistive or transformer-type dimmers intended for filament lamps can cause flicker or buzz, and a trailing edge LED dimmer is the safer choice.
