E27 (ES) LED GLS Bulb 4.9W 470lm Non-Dimmable - Daylight 6500K

This is a standard GLS light bulb with an E27 screw cap, the familiar pear shape that has lit British homes for a century, rebuilt around LEDs. It draws 4.9W and gives 470 lumens at 6500K, a crisp daylight white with no yellow in it. The glass is frosted rather than clear, so the light source inside is diffused into an even glow and you do not get the hard sparkle of an exposed filament. The pack calls it a 40W replacement and prints a 15,000 hour life together with instant start, so there is no warm up period before you get full output.

Daylight at 6500K is the coolest white commonly sold, and it suits work far more than lounging. Put it where you need to see detail clearly: a kitchen ceiling fitting, a utility room, a garage or workshop pendant, a home office desk lamp, a craft or sewing table. It reads as bright and awake, which is exactly what people dislike about it in a bedroom and exactly why they want it over a worktop. The 220 degree beam angle spreads light across close to a full half sphere, so it works in open shades and upward facing fittings as well as in plain batten holders.

This lamp is not dimmable. Wired to a dimmer circuit it may flicker, buzz or simply refuse to strike, so keep it on a plain on/off switch. It carries an F energy rating, with consumption of 5 kWh per 1000 hours, and the IP20 rating means it is intended for ordinary dry indoor fittings. Each unit is a single bulb, and the minimum order is 10, sold in multiples of 10, which suits relamping a whole house or keeping spares in the cupboard. Will this fit my existing lamp holder?

It takes an E27 holder, the larger of the two screw caps, roughly 27mm across the thread. Unscrew your old bulb and check the cap is a screw rather than a two pin push and twist bayonet.

Can I use it on a dimmer switch?

No. This one is non-dimmable, so on a dimmer circuit it may flicker, hum or fail to light at all. Choose a lamp marked dimmable for those rooms, or change the dimmer for a standard switch.

What does 6500K daylight actually look like?

Clean and blue white, much closer to midday light than to a candle. It makes whites look white and colours look true, which is why it is popular over kitchen worktops and work benches.

Is 470 lumens bright enough to replace my old bulb?

The pack rates it as a 40W replacement, so it matches the older, gentler household bulb rather than a 60W or 100W one. For a large room you may want two fittings or a higher output lamp.

Will the light spread properly in an open shade?

Yes. The 220 degree beam angle throws light sideways and downwards rather than in a narrow cone, so it fills pendants, table lamps and open shades evenly without a hot spot underneath.
