Description

The Dernessa is a wide, low drum of a ceiling light that sits flush against the ceiling: a white fabric shade wrapped around a white steel body, with a white diffuser closing the underside. It measures 76cm across and just 15cm deep, so it covers a broad stretch of ceiling without dropping down into the room. It takes five E27 bulbs of up to 25W each, and the bulbs are not included, which leaves the choice of warmth and brightness with you. Its IP20 rating settles where it belongs: indoors, in a dry room.

At this size the Dernessa suits the larger rooms of a home: a living room, a main bedroom, a dining room or a generous landing. Because it sits tight to the ceiling, it works well where the ceiling is on the low side and a hanging pendant would crowd heads and doorways, yet it still gives a tall room one broad source of light. The diffuser closes off the bottom of the drum, so from the floor you see a clean white circle rather than bare bulbs. Plain white on both shade and body sits quietly against almost any scheme, from pale walls to deeper colour, and it will not compete with artwork or furniture.

There is no switch on the light itself; it is switched at the wall, so it answers to the light switch in the room. As a wired mains light, it is installed by a qualified electrician, and the installation instructions come as a PDF download. Packed, it weighs 4.24KG. When you buy bulbs, keep each of the five holders to the 25W maximum and choose one colour of white for all five, so the light stays even.
