Description

A round bulkhead in sand white, with an opal white diffuser sitting behind a slim frame that divides the disc into quarters. It measures 27cm across and projects only a little, so it sits close and stays clear of opening doors and gates. Inside is a single E27 lampholder taking up to 40W, and we would use an LED candle lamp for a soft, even glow through the opal. The opal softens the lamp, so you are not looking at a bright point as you come up the path. It comes unswitched, and will dim with a compatible lamp and dimmer.

Porches, back doors, side returns and garage walls are its natural home, and it is sealed against dust and splashing rain so it copes with weather driven at the wall. It can go on a ceiling too, which suits a porch soffit or a covered walkway where a hanging lantern would be in the way. We like it on flats and terraces where the entrance is tight, and a pair either side of a double door looks calm rather than showy. It stays quiet on a wall, which matters by a front door you use every day.

The frame is finished in matt sand white, which reads cleanly against brick, render and painted timber, with the opal white diffuser beneath. Wipe the diffuser and frame with a damp cloth and a little washing up liquid now and again, more often near the coast where salt settles, and let it dry before the power goes back on. It carries a one year warranty. The same fitting is offered in anthracite, and the range runs to plain and eyelid bulkheads in both finishes. Lamps are not included.
