Description

Clear crystal cut into a square rim, with a bubbled surface that catches the light and throws small bright points around the opening. Each side measures 90mm, and it sits over a 62mm cut-out. This is the decorative part on its own: a lampholder and retaining ring kit completes it, and we keep those in satin black, aged brass, polished chrome and French gold so the working parts can be matched to the ironmongery already in the room.

We reach for rims like this where a plain downlight would read as a blank hole: a hallway ceiling, an alcove above a dressing table, a short run over a bar or a shelf of glassware. Clear crystal sits happily against a papered or panelled ceiling and just as well against flat white. Keep it to dry rooms indoors, bedrooms, landings and sitting rooms rather than a shower zone. Dimming is possible where the lamp chosen behind it is a dimmable one.

The crystal is clear all the way through, with the bubble texture worked into the body rather than laid on the surface, so the sparkle does not wear off. Faceted glass shows dust sooner than a plain bezel, so a soft brush or a dry cloth now and then keeps it lively, and fingerprints lift with a barely damp cloth wiped dry straight after. It carries a one year warranty. The same square is offered in aqua and green, and there is a round bubble rim in clear if you want to mix shapes along a ceiling. Neither the lampholder kit nor a lamp comes with the rim.

The rim is made for a 62mm cut-out. The visible crystal is 90mm square, so it covers a little beyond the opening on all four sides.

Is anything else needed to use it?

Yes. This is the crystal rim only. A lampholder and retaining ring kit, reference IL30800, completes the fitting, and a lamp is chosen separately.

How deep is the rim itself?

The crystal is 20mm high. The overall depth needed depends on the lampholder kit and lamp paired with it.

Can it be dimmed?

It can, provided the lamp fitted behind it is a dimmable type and it is paired with a suitable dimmer. No dimmer is supplied.

How should the crystal be cleaned?

A dry, soft cloth or a clean brush for dust, then a barely damp cloth for marks, dried immediately. Avoid solvents and abrasive creams on the faceted faces.

Can it be used in a bathroom?

It is rated IP20, so it belongs in dry indoor rooms rather than anywhere exposed to spray or splashing.
