Description

BARE is the modern range at Harte, drawn in house by Jack Harte for houses where a Victorian lantern would look borrowed. This is the box wall lantern from it: a squared, slightly tapered lantern with straight edges and clear glazing, sitting flat against the wall with almost no projection. The shape is deliberately close to an interior shade on a stand, which is what gives it its character against render, timber cladding or a flat modern elevation. It stands 285mm tall, which is small by the standards of the rest of Harte's catalogue.

Because it sits flush it works where nothing else fits: a narrow side passage, a doorway with a close-swinging door, a low soffit, a flat-roofed extension or a garden wall that people walk past. It is normally bought in pairs, one either side of a door or spaced along a wall, since the fitting is small enough that a single one can look lost on a wide elevation. Harte build it in galvanised mild steel with hand-cut glass, hand sprayed in gloss black enamel, and rate the BARE lanterns IP44 and CE marked.

The lamp is an ordinary E27 screw fitting, supplied without a bulb, so the output and colour are yours; a squirrel-cage filament LED suits the clean shape, and 7W at 2700K keeps it warm. Everything in the BARE range is made to order in New Ross, County Wexford, so allow two to five weeks. Gloss black is standard and any RAL colour can be sprayed instead if you say so when ordering. Wiring an outdoor fitting is work for a qualified electrician on a protected circuit.
