Description

The Chawton is a 182mm-wide picture light built from solid brass with an aged finish, featuring adjustable knuckle joints at each side that allow the light head to tilt and direct illumination onto artwork or framed photographs. The light head measures 119mm tall and projects 186mm from the wall when mounted, housing a single E14 candle bulb (sold separately, maximum 40W).

Designed to mount above paintings, prints and family portraits up to approximately 600mm wide, the Chawton sits on a rectangular backplate that fixes directly to the wall or picture frame. The knuckle joints on both arms rotate through approximately 90 degrees, allowing the light to be angled down onto the artwork or adjusted to minimise glare on glass-fronted frames. The aged brass finish softens reflections and pairs well with oil paintings, gilt frames and traditional interiors.

The solid brass construction gives the fitting a substantial feel without overwhelming smaller works. The aged finish develops naturally over time, darkening slightly in areas less exposed to light and air. The light accepts any standard E14 candle bulb — most users pair this with a 4-6W warm-white LED at 2700K for controlled accent lighting that does not overpower the artwork itself.

Frequently Asked

What size artwork does this suit?

The 182mm width works best with paintings and prints up to approximately 600mm wide. For larger artworks, Elstead produces a larger version of the Chawton with a wider light head.

What bulb should I use?

The fitting takes a standard E14 candle bulb up to 40W. For art lighting, a warm-white LED between 4-6W at 2700K provides controlled accent light without overheating the frame or fading pigments over time. Bulbs are sold separately.

Can the light head be adjusted after installation?

Yes. The knuckle joints at each side of the light head rotate through approximately 90 degrees, allowing the light to be angled down onto the artwork or adjusted to minimise glare on glass-fronted frames.

How is the aged brass finish maintained?

The aged brass develops a natural patina over time, darkening in areas less exposed to air. This is a feature of the finish, not a defect. If preferred, the brass can be gently wiped with a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust, but do not use metal polish or chemical cleaners as these will strip the aged finish.
