Description

Charlie is a sausage dog made for birthdays, a multicoloured party piece 28cm long, 5cm wide and 14cm tall. He is built from MDF, plywood and aluminium and weighs 0.65KG, a size that suits the middle of a party table without crowding it. Painted stripes run across his body like a knitted jumper, a striped party hat perches on his head and a floppy, textured ear hangs beside his face. Two wrapped presents with painted bows ride on his back, and a single number stands on the top parcel to show the age being celebrated.

His place is the centre of a birthday table, where the number on his back tells every guest how old the birthday child is turning. Two candle holders sit along his back, one behind his head and one in front of his tail, each taking a slim taper candle, so he shares the moment of blowing out the candles. Between parties he makes a cheerful piece for a shelf, a windowsill or a chest of drawers in a child's bedroom or playroom. As a first birthday gift he becomes a keepsake to bring out again each year.

His body is a flat, cut-out profile with legs at each end and an upturned tail, so the dog, his hat and his presents read clearly from the front of the table.
