Description

The Canterbury is an up-facing outdoor wall lantern in black die-cast aluminium with clear glass panels divided by window bars in a six-pane Georgian arrangement. The lantern housing measures 215mm wide by 440mm high with a 250mm projection from the wall, mounted on a scrolled bracket that curves out and down. The fitting takes a single E27 bulb up to 60W (sold separately) and carries an IP43 rating, making it suitable for covered outdoor positions.

Designed for porches, covered front doors, garage sides and other sheltered exterior positions, the Canterbury provides upward-directed light that washes the wall above and reflects back down to illuminate the ground beneath. The up-facing orientation reduces direct glare when approaching the door and creates a softer ambient effect than downward-facing lanterns. The IP43 rating protects against solid objects larger than 1mm and water spray at angles up to 60 degrees from vertical, so the lantern requires overhead protection from rain and should not be fitted in fully exposed positions.

The die-cast aluminium construction gives the lantern enough weight to feel substantial on the wall without requiring heavy-duty fixings — the complete fitting weighs approximately 1.2kg. The black powder-coated finish is applied over the aluminium to resist UV fade and corrosion in coastal and urban environments. The window bars are cast as part of the frame rather than applied separately, so there are no joints where moisture can penetrate. The clear glass allows the maximum light output from whatever bulb is fitted, whether a traditional filament lamp for warm tones or a cool-white LED for higher security visibility.

Frequently Asked

Can this be fitted in fully exposed positions?

No. The IP43 rating means the lantern is protected against water spray at angles up to 60 degrees from vertical, but it is not weatherproof against direct rain or driving horizontal rain. Fit it under a porch, canopy, or other overhead shelter where the lantern itself is not directly rained on.

What bulb does it take?

The Canterbury takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most installations use a warm-white LED bulb between 6-10W and 2700K-3000K to match the traditional lantern style, though cool-white LEDs can be fitted if higher visibility is needed for security.

How is the lantern fixed to the wall?

The back plate of the mounting bracket has two fixing holes for screws into the wall. The lantern weighs approximately 1.2kg when assembled, so standard masonry fixings into brick or block are sufficient. The electrical cable enters through a knock-out in the back plate and connects to the lampholder inside.

Does it cast light downwards or only upwards?

The bulb faces upwards, so the primary light output is directed up onto the wall above the lantern. Light then reflects back down from the wall and spills through the clear glass panels to illuminate the ground beneath. This gives softer ambient light with less direct glare than a downward-facing lantern.
