Description
The Canterbury is a 380mm outdoor pedestal lantern with a black die-cast aluminium frame, six-pane clear seeded glass panels, and a single E27 bulb fitting inside the lantern cage. The frame follows a traditional tapered coach-house design with a square base plate, a pyramidal roof cap, and vertical glazing bars dividing the glass into a grid pattern on all four sides.
Designed for mounting on gate posts, driveway pillars, low boundary walls and porch steps where a traditional post-top light is needed, the Canterbury provides downward and outward illumination through the seeded glass. The IP43 rating protects against solid objects larger than 1mm and water spray from any direction, making the lantern suitable for exposed positions under open sky but not for areas subject to direct hosing or submersion. The square base plate fixes to a flat post top or pillar cap using fixings supplied with the lantern.
The die-cast aluminium construction provides corrosion resistance and structural rigidity in coastal and wet climates, while the black powder-coat finish maintains its appearance without the patina changes seen in uncoated metals. The seeded glass texture diffuses the bulb image and softens glare, distributing light more evenly across pathways and entrance areas than clear glass would. At 215mm width the lantern suits posts of 200-250mm square section, while the 380mm height gives presence without overwhelming typical domestic gatepost proportions.
The Canterbury accepts any standard E27 bulb up to 60W, giving flexibility to choose between warm-white LED (2700K) for traditional ambience, daylight LED (4000K) for security visibility, or decorative filament bulbs where the seeded glass allows the lamp to be partially visible. Elstead Lighting backs the lantern with a 5-year warranty covering manufacturing defects and finish degradation.

Frequently Asked
What size post does this fit?
The 215mm square base plate suits posts of 200-250mm section. The base plate fixes to a flat post top or pillar cap using fixings supplied with the lantern. For larger posts the base plate may look undersized; for smaller posts it may overhang slightly.
Can this be used on a coastal property?
Yes. The die-cast aluminium construction with powder-coat finish provides corrosion resistance in coastal environments. The IP43 rating protects against salt spray and wind-driven rain but not direct hosing or submersion. Regular rinsing with fresh water extends the finish life in high-salt exposure areas.
What bulb should I use?
The lantern takes any standard E27 bulb up to 60W. Most users fit a warm-white LED between 6-10W and 2700K for traditional ambience, or a daylight LED at 4000K for security visibility. Decorative filament bulbs work well as the seeded glass diffuses but does not fully hide the lamp.
How is the glass cleaned?
The seeded glass texture traps dust and pollen more readily than smooth glass. Wipe the exterior panels with a damp microfibre cloth every few months to maintain light output. For interior cleaning, remove the base fixings, lift the lantern off the post, and access the glass panels from inside the frame.
