Our wooden kids bookcase is a tidy grid of six cubbies, each holding its own drawer, and the drawers are the clever part. They are reversible, so turning one round changes its front: a friendly animal face with rounded ears, a striped or dotted pattern, or plain wood. A child can shuffle the faces and patterns as often as they please, which keeps the multicoloured mix feeling fresh. It is made from 70% paulownia and 30% MDF, and it measures 55cm long, 28cm wide and 90cm tall, a narrow footprint for a small bedroom.

Upright, it gives three rows of two drawers with a flat top for picture books and a pot of pencils. Turn it on its long side and it becomes a low unit of two rows of three, a good height for a play corner in a nursery. The drawers suit the small things that otherwise spread across the floor: building blocks, soft toys, crayons, hair clips and folded clothes. Each drawer has a cut-out grip at the top edge, so little hands have something to hold. Because the fronts can go back to plain wood, the bookcase also sits comfortably in a hallway, a family room or a guest bedroom once the faces have had their day.

Paulownia is one of the lightest hardwoods, and here it is paired with MDF; the whole bookcase weighs 13.3KG. The finish is a water-based paint, and the legs are natural paulownia, short and round, lifting the base clear of the floor. Care is simple: wipe it clean with a moist cloth.
