Description

This children's bookcase is a painted wooden storage unit 55cm long, 28cm wide and 90cm tall, made from 85% paulownia and 15% MDF. It is divided into six compartments: three stand open for books and toys, and three are closed by fronts. One front carries a circus print of big-top tents, strongmen, tumblers in hoops and leaping animals; another is plain with a round wooden knob; the third is a friendly rabbit face whose ears rise above the top of its compartment. Together they make a multicoloured piece with plenty of character.

It belongs in a child's bedroom, nursery or playroom, where picture books, soft toys and puzzles need a home that a child can see at a glance. It works two ways: upright, it is a narrow column of three rows that fits beside a bed or a door; turned on its long side, it becomes a low unit of three columns that sits neatly beneath a window or along a wall. The open compartments keep favourites on show, while the fronted ones hide the clutter that never quite gets tidied, and the top gives a surface for a basket, a few books or a small display.
