Description

These are two stoneware candle holders, each modelled as a small fish with a socket for a single candle rising from its back. The bodies are worked in relief: raised scales run from gill to tail, the fins are finely lined, and each fish has a round eye and a slightly open mouth, so they read clearly as fish even from across a room. They come as a pair in a multicoloured finish, a different shade on each fish under a glossy glaze. Each holder is 13cm long, 5.5cm wide and 7cm tall, small enough for a narrow shelf or a windowsill, and the listed weight is 0.3KG.

Because they sit low and compact, they suit spots where a tall candlestick would feel too much: a bookcase shelf, a mantelpiece, a sideboard or a bedside table. Line them up nose to tail, turn them to face each other, or give one to each of two rooms. The fish theme makes them a natural fit for a coastal scheme, a kitchen dresser filled with glazed pottery or a hallway that needs a little humour. They also make a cheerful gift for anyone who collects ceramics.

Both holders are made entirely of stoneware, a dense, hard-fired clay, and finished in glaze. The maker notes that, due to the nature of the glaze, colour variations may occur, so the depth of shade and the way the glaze settles into the scales can differ a little from piece to piece; that is the character of a glazed ceramic rather than a fault. The styling props shown are not included, so add candles of your own choosing. For styling, pair them with plain taper candles in a soft neutral so the fish keep the attention, and group them with other glazed pieces in a similar palette for a relaxed, collected look.

Frequently Asked

What material are the fish candle holders?

Both holders are made of 100% stoneware and finished in a glaze, which gives the raised scales their shine and depth.

How big is each fish candle holder?

Each holder is 13cm long, 5.5cm wide and 7cm tall, a compact size that sits comfortably on a shelf, windowsill or mantelpiece.

How many candle holders do I get?

You receive two stoneware fish candle holders in a multicoloured finish, with a different shade on each fish. Candles are not included.

Will every pair look identical?

Not quite. The maker notes that, due to the nature of the glaze, colour variations may occur, so the depth of shade can differ slightly from one pair to the next.

Where would these fish candle holders look best?

Their low, compact shape suits a bookcase shelf, mantelpiece, sideboard or bedside table, and the fish theme sits naturally in a coastal scheme or beside other glazed pottery.
