Description

These are two grey stoneware platters, sold together as a set, each with hand-painted decoration. The larger one carries a small raised robin perched at one end, and the smaller one a raised apple with a bite taken out of it. A trail of little footprints wanders across both, as if the bird has just walked over them, with sprigs of foliage painted near the edge. Each has a soft, irregular outline rather than a neat oval, and a speckled surface. The smaller platter is 22cm long and 14cm wide, the larger is 27cm long and 17cm wide, and both are 6cm tall.

Both are approved for use with food, so they are made for the table. The smaller size takes a couple of slices of cake, a few biscuits or a mince pie to go with a cup of tea, while the larger holds cheese and crackers, sliced fruit or a small loaf for sharing. A robin and an apple make them a natural pair for the colder months, whether on the kitchen table, a sideboard or a breakfast tray, and they make a thoughtful present for anyone who loves watching garden birds. Between meals, the larger one sits happily on a dresser or hall table as a catch-all for keys.

Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing ceramic, and the decoration on these is painted by hand. They do not go in the dishwasher, so wash them by hand and dry them before putting them away. They are not for the microwave or the oven either, so do any warming in another dish and bring the food to the table on these. The styling props shown are not included. We like to set the larger platter slightly behind the smaller one with the robin and the apple at the same end, so both little figures face the room and the footprints lead the eye across the pair.
