Broad and shallow, this is a shade-and-diffuser fitting that sits close to the ceiling rather than hanging beneath it. The drum measures 40cm across and is made in dual faux silk, raw cocoa on the outer face with a grecian bronze lining that warms the light as it spreads. Below it, a frosted acrylic diffuser finished with satin nickel closes the underside so the lamp itself stays out of view, and the frame and ceiling plate share that same satin nickel.

We reach for this one where a pendant would hang too low: a landing, a hall with a modest ceiling, a bedroom where a wardrobe door needs clearance. The diffused underside gives soft, even light across the room rather than a tight pool, which makes it a sensible main fitting in a space that already has table or floor lamps for close work. It takes an E27 lamp of up to 20W and we would fit an LED GLS globe here. With a compatible lamp and dimmer it can be dimmed, and it is a Class 1 fitting requiring an earth connection.

The build is simple and honest: a metal frame under the satin nickel finish, a fabric-covered shade and an acrylic diffuser. Keep the faux silk fresh with a soft brush or the upholstery head of a vacuum, working gently around the drum, and wipe the acrylic with a barely damp cloth once the power is off and the lamp cold, leaving solvents and sprays well away from it. It carries a one year warranty. Lamps are not included. How far does it drop from the ceiling?

The body of the fitting stands 180mm deep, with an overall height of 380mm and a shade diameter of 400mm, so it stays tight to the ceiling compared with a hanging pendant.

What lamp should I use?

One E27 lamp rated up to 20W. An LED GLS A60 globe is the sensible choice, and it is not supplied with the fitting.

Can I put it on a dimmer?

Yes, provided you use a dimmable lamp and a matching dimmer switch. Neither the lamp nor the dimmer comes with the light.

What are the two colours in the shade?

The outside is raw cocoa faux silk and the lining is grecian bronze. Both belong to this shade; they are not separate versions of the product.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20 and belongs in dry rooms such as bedrooms, halls, landings and sitting rooms, away from splashes and steam.

How do I clean the diffuser?

Switch off at the wall and let the lamp go cold, then wipe the acrylic with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water. Avoid abrasive creams and solvent cleaners, which can haze the surface.
