Baymont Frosted Diffuser Semi Flush Ivory 40cm - Polished Chrome

A shallow drum of ivory pearl faux silk sits close to the ceiling here, held on a polished chrome frame with a frosted acrylic diffuser closing the underside. The shade is 40cm across, so light spreads wide and soft rather than dropping in a narrow pool, and the white laminate lining pushes more of it back down into the room. One E27 lamp does the work, tucked behind the diffuser. With a suitable lamp and a compatible dimmer it can be dimmed, which helps in rooms used at all hours.

We reach for this where a pendant would hang too low: hallways and landings, a bedroom, or a small dining room with the table pushed to one side. The body stands only a little clear of the ceiling, so head height is never in question, while the fabric shade keeps the look furnished rather than purely functional. It suits anyone after something soft in outline in a room where chrome already turns up on switch plates, handles or a nearby mirror frame. A 20W maximum keeps the fitting gentle and cheap to run.

The frame and trim are polished chrome, the diffuser is acrylic, and the shade is faux silk over a laminated lining, so the whole fitting is light in the hand. Dust the fabric with a soft brush now and then, following the seam rather than scrubbing across it, and wipe the chrome with a barely damp cloth to keep it bright; the acrylic dislikes solvents, so plain water is all it wants. It carries a one year warranty. Can I put it on a dimmer?

Yes, provided you choose a dimmable lamp and a dimmer module rated for it. Neither the lamp nor the dimmer comes with the fitting.

How far does it hang below the ceiling?

Overall height is 380mm, with the chrome body itself accounting for 180mm of that, so it stays well clear of head height in a hallway.

Is the shade fabric or plastic?

The outer shade is faux silk in ivory pearl with a white laminate lining. Only the diffuser panel at the base is acrylic.

Will it light a whole room?

With a 40cm shade and a downward diffuser it gives broad, soft light suited to a hall, landing or bedroom. In a larger living room we would pair it with a lamp or two at low level.

Does it need an earth?

Yes, it is a Class 1 fitting and requires an earth connection at the ceiling point.
