Description

The shade does most of the talking here: a dual faux silk drum in antique gold with a ruby lining, so the colour deepens as the light falls through it. It measures 40cm across and sits close under the ceiling on an antique brass frame, with a frosted acrylic diffuser closing the underside so the lamp is not stared at from below. It takes an E27 lamp, and we would put an LED GLS in it for a warm, even fill.

This is the fitting we suggest for hallways, landings and bedrooms with ordinary ceiling heights, where a hanging pendant would be in the way but a plain flat fitting would look a little thin. The diffuser softens what comes straight down while the ruby lining lifts warmth up into the drum, so the fabric glows rather than sitting dark. Fit a dimmable lamp and pair it with a compatible dimmer and it drops back easily for evenings, which makes it a sensible choice over a stair return or in a guest room that has to work for reading as well as resting.

The metalwork is finished in antique brass, an aged gold tone rather than a bright polish, and it is a good partner for older woodwork and warm paint colours. Keep the fabric fresh with a soft brush or the upholstery head of a vacuum on its lowest setting, and give the acrylic diffuser an occasional wipe once everything is cold and switched off.
