A broad drum shade in midnight black faux silk, lined in green olive, gives this one its weight, and the light leaves through a frosted acrylic diffuser fitted into the base so nothing glares back from below. The shade runs 60cm across, wide enough to anchor a room on its own, while overall height stays at 42cm. Polished chrome on the plate and on the diffuser trim keeps a bright edge against the dark fabric. It takes an E27 lamp, and we would fit an LED GLS and leave it at that.

We reach for this where a ceiling sits too low for a pendant but the room still wants something with scale: a hallway, a landing, a bedroom, or over a small dining table in a flat. The diffuser makes it comfortable to sit under, and the wide shade lifts a soft wash onto the ceiling as well as pushing light down. It will dim, given a compatible lamp and dimmer, which suits bedrooms in particular. Wattage tops out at 20W, so an LED is the sensible choice. Keep it to dry rooms indoors.

The frame is plated metal, polished to a mirror brightness; the shade is fabric over a rigid form, and the diffuser is acrylic rather than glass. For cleaning, isolate the supply and let the fitting go cold, lift dust from the fabric with a soft brush or an upholstery head on low suction, then wipe the acrylic and the chrome with a barely damp cloth and dry them off. It carries a one year warranty. What lamp should I use?

One E27 lamp, up to 20W. An LED GLS in the A60 shape is what we would fit, since the frosted diffuser hides the lamp and an LED keeps running costs and heat low.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, with a dimmable lamp and a matching dimmer switch. Neither the lamp nor the dimmer is included.

How much room does it need?

Allow 60cm of clear ceiling for the shade, with a total drop of 42cm below the ceiling line. The chrome body itself accounts for 220mm of that height.

Is the green part visible?

The green olive is the inner lining, seen as a warm cast on the light and at the lower edge of the shade. The outer face is midnight black.

How do I clean the faux silk?

Dry methods only. A soft brush or low vacuum suction for dust; avoid damp cloths and sprays on the fabric, which can mark it. Damp cleaning is fine on the acrylic and chrome.
