Description

A wide fabric drum sits close to the ceiling here, finished in antique gold faux silk with a ruby lining that warms the light as it spills down. Beneath it, a frosted acrylic diffuser in an antique brass surround softens the view of the lamp and spreads the light sideways as well as down. At 50cm across it reads as a generous, calm shape overhead, and the metalwork keeps the same aged brass tone throughout. The gold has a slightly antiqued, low-sheen look rather than a bright metallic one.

We reach for this where a pendant would hang too low: hallways and landings, bedrooms under a lower ceiling, or a snug that needs soft fill light with nothing dangling in the way. It takes a single E27 lamp and we would fit a GLS A60 LED, up to 20W. Dimming is possible with a compatible lamp and a dimmer, both bought separately. Because the light is diffused rather than aimed, it works well as the main fitting in a room where a bare lamp would glare. It is a large shade, so give it a proper stretch of ceiling rather than a narrow corner.

The shade is dual-faced faux silk, gold outside and ruby within, so its colour shifts depending on whether the fitting is lit. Keep the fabric looking fresh with a soft brush or a lint roller, and take dust off the acrylic panel with a barely damp cloth once the power is off and the lamp has cooled. It carries a one year warranty.
