Baymont Frosted Diffuser Semi Flush 40cm Bronze - Antique Brass

A faux silk drum shade, held on an antique brass frame and sitting close to the ceiling on a short body, gives this one its shape. The shade is dual skinned: Raw Cocoa on the outside, with a Grecian Bronze lining that warms the light as it falls. Underneath, a frosted acrylic diffuser ringed in antique brass closes the base, so the lamp is never in view and the light spreads softly rather than pooling. At 40cm across it reads as generous without taking over a small ceiling.

We turn to it where a pendant would hang too low: hallways and landings, bedrooms, a spare room, or a kitchen table in a flat where headroom is tight. It takes an E27 lamp, and an LED GLS is what we would fit, keeping to the 20W maximum. Dimming is possible with a compatible LED lamp and dimmer, so the same fitting can be bright for a morning routine and low in the evening. The fabric shade suits rooms with wood, wool and warm paint colours, and the brass detail picks up on ironmongery and picture frames without shouting about it.

The metalwork carries an aged antique brass finish, quieter than a bright plated shine, and the diffuser is acrylic, which keeps the weight down overhead. For care, cut the power and give it a few minutes to cool, then lift dust from the fabric with a soft brush and wipe the acrylic with a barely damp cloth, drying it straight away; solvents will haze it. It belongs indoors, in dry rooms. It carries a one year warranty, and lamps are not included. One E27 lamp, up to 20W. We would fit an LED GLS in the A60 shape, which sits neatly inside the shade.

How far does it drop from the ceiling?

Overall height is 380mm, of which the metal body accounts for 180mm, so it stays close to the ceiling rather than hanging.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, with a dimmable LED lamp and a matching dimmer. Neither the lamp nor the dimmer is supplied.

What are the two colours on the shade?

The outer face is Raw Cocoa faux silk and the inside is lined in Grecian Bronze, so the light takes on a warmer tone as it passes through the frosted acrylic diffuser.

How wide is it, and how heavy?

It measures 400mm in diameter and weighs 1.1kg.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20 and should be kept to dry indoor rooms such as bedrooms, hallways and living spaces.
